Just toss the pump into bucket of Hot H20 and open the shower valve for a nice hot shower. Not tested (yet) --- I will need to provide the 12v to the pump.... using a long cord or a small batter pack or 12v stand-alone (dedicated) battery. Hot Showers in Winter - Cool ones in Summer!

  • Spent a surprise (not planned) 2 days up at Shady Grove around November 11th w/ my friend Chris. He drove us up in his 4 wheel drive, his dog Samson came w/ us ...Chris slept under a tarp on a cot 20 feet in front of my RV. I was sleeping inside the RV - (very comfortable too I might add) - Chris slept well too, admitting cold at night, w/ temps down in the low 20's ...we stayed warm with a 2 day fire that never went out - Chris brought his chain saw an cut us "rounders" which he then split by axe and ...we then had a snap crackling fire. We cooked on the fire... and stayed up late #GOODtime #cold (the wood had we purchased it at a WINCO or superstore, would have cost us around 200$ by the 5$ rip off bundle.... for what we burned those two days at shady grove
  • It snowed in the morning - our fire still had coals. I had my Mr Buddy in the RV. The snow melted ...chilly and brisk but quite and peaceful. Going back up in December. I filled all the bird feeders before I left ....seen lots of Blue Birds .... and the bird bath dish was frozen
  • New video from the Winter Cold Camping Trip in October 2020 is here: https://youtu.be/XL6o147T5YU
  • I spent 8 days and 8 nights in mid October 2020, The temp got down to the low 20's brrrr. I had some propane issues as well as shorting out my solar panel controller by testing it w/ a meter the WRONG way - dang. The propane hose was bitten by a squirrel, after going w/o i did a survivalist trick and made a makeshift patch on the propane hose: it worked!
  •   On my eight days at SG I got the outdoor RV shower/toilet building finished (walls n roof) still needs a door. I also got the tool shed area roofed and walls (needs a door too) and I got some caulking in the cabin done (well 1/2 done) I also installed 2 rolls of insulation in the cabin (cant wait its gonna be warm / cool as needed) I dug out the big fire pit and its ready to be used, also put camoflauge tarps all over the Motorhome - hey where is it ? • The 8 x 8 cabin needs a roof and doors and windows in the first part spring of 2020
  • I will be hauling lumber for the BIGGER cabin 10 x 10 in the spring / summer of 2020
  • November is cold at Shady Grove, weather reports show lows in the 20's at night
  • -- Not planning any winter trips - Spring 2020 will be my next visit
  • Oct 2 and 3rd spent the day and night at Shady in tents, bringing more cedar shingles for the cabin with us and winterize all the equipment. Great time ...good fall weather...seen a mother deer and her 3 fawns, a couple wild turkeys in our camp and lots of birds and chipmunks..... nature is alive ,,,very peaceful / no people.
  • Fall camping one night 10/2/19 ...nice n warm in our tents and a Fire (in season now) to warm us up and cook our dinner over. My friend gave me fresh grown sweet corn that we cooked over the fire. It was me and Lee. We went into town the next morning for a burger and a beer at the local / our favorite tavern, in Goldendale.
  • We winterized everything. New tarps on the cabin ...tarps everywhere. 10/2/19
  • Planning on Oct camping to work on the cabin and to winterize as much as possible. Fires are now allowed in this cool wet season. Camping for one night planned for Oct 2nd 2019
  • Spent one night on 9/17 - getting cooler. I wrapped Tar paper around 3 sides of cabin up from ground to about 6 ft high. On east side I laid down 4 rows of cedar shingles starting from the bottom up to about 5 feet off the ground. i have enough shingles to finish this side and one more side. Crooked rows but it looks good. Need to get the door side finished before snow hits and still no roof (just a tarp)
  • Sept 17 & 18 overnight plans are for sure  - I will be putting 4 walls up on the 8x8 cabin. Needs to get done before winter. Also need to get summer gear put away for Fall.
  • OMC KAMPING TRIP 2019 was fantastic - 4 people & 2 trucks. All the beer and food you could eat. Rain was in forecast but no rain but a small early morning sprinkle. Weather is getting cooler (less hot sun) - added bird feeder tray ...and stocked up the bird feeders. We used a brand new propane fire pit that was "approved" for use during the no burn season.
  • Spent 2 nights by my self - Put up a 3rd shower wall (fence) and installed 2 more framed walls for the small 8x8 cabin. The cabin now has four framed walls ...siding and roof is next.
  • BIG KAMPING TRIP PLANNED ON SEPTEMBER 8 / 9/ 10 No Holes Barred!
  • All are Welcome if your reading this newsletter - Please RSVP to me if your going :-)
  • Day trip on Tuesday 8/20 was with Me, Krystal and Charles and it was fantastic, stopped in town for a beer and a burger, and we had super great weather.
  • August Family Reunion Day Picnic well attended and a successful event. Tours and picnic
  • Brought 2 picnic tables w/ umbrella covers up to Shady - also have all my tools up there.
  • Started framing walls for the 8x8 cabin (my first one) have two sides up as of 8/12th I will be getting more wood on 8/26 to finish all the way around. (2x3 Frame only at this point)
  • Middle of June a camping trip is being organized.
  • Truck needs brakes and tires and the Honda car is having problems, so as of this Shady news alert on 5/18/19 both of my vehicles are down. We are walking or using buses to get around until the repairs can be made?!. Need money to make the repairs.....Shady Grove plans are slowing to a crawl as the vehicle money pit demands and swallows all the extra money for camping or driving to Shady Grove.
  • The small new fence I put up by the solar shower blew over in the 2019 winter winds, need to make it more sturdy. Will be working on the fence and the shower area as well as the small first cabin, by the shower area, this summer. Mike n Lee cleaned a lot of brush and low branches from around the camp. Sawdust sprinkled on parts of trails and on ground where a tent would go (soft n fluffy) - Put bird food in feeders and hung new trail signs up.
  • Hammocks were destroyed by mice, will need to get new ones and make them mice proof. I do have a used hammock to install in June.
  • A cheap tarp w/ rain barrel was set up to see if I can collect water in a 55 gallon drum. More work needed on this temporary setup. Will be using roof gutters to collect rain water once the roof has been raised on cabin and parking cover
  • Mike n Lee camped in mid April for 3 nights. Road was mushy and wood was soggy. We got stuck on road by the entrance to Shady, dug it out on the last day and drove out w/ no trouble. Wet weather in April and May ...should be drying out soon. Camping in mid June is being planned.
  • On my day trip on April 9th I took my grandson with me. The road to my property on the last 50 feet was super ankle deep muddy. He really liked it and was a good helper. We had to park the truck on the road and walked the last 50 feet. We also packed in a few bags of sawdust that we put down on the first part of the shady grove trail. I also put a bag of sawdust which was sprinkled over the area where a tent camp is. Located right by main camp and the fire pit (sunshine daydream camp).
  • We made a fire with a ting bunch of dry twigs, it was quite hard to get going with no dry wood. All the wood at shady grove is totally drenched and soaking wet. Eventually we got it blazing good and the wet wood was now burning for us. No big logs just branches. We left around 9pm as it was getting pretty dark.
  • No snow in the area...lots of flooded areas that we drove by...fields and ditches. My land is dry from any standing water but the road leading to my place is very soupy and muddy ...I will need a big load of gravel "pit rock" size to make the road accessible in the rainy seasons.
  • One of the shower fence walls blew down. I think it was just a few nails holding it up when I made it...I will sturdy that up this spring and will be adding more to the project to have a functional nice out door shower area.
  • I filled a big bird feeder, and right by the main fire, I dropped off my 2 "tire chairs" ...which are made out of old recycled tires.
  • We noticed that if it wasn't covered and or inside plastic and out of the weather, the winter really worked it over. I gotta think of "waterproofing" more better.... for next year.
  • I went to Shady Grove for the day to "check it out" on 4/9/19 And all is well up there, no snow just mud and everything is soaked

  • Going to go up and check things out on April 7th ...just for the day. I will be taking a 1/2 dozen 20 lb bags of gravel, 2 big bags of sawdust for the compost and the trails, lawn chairs, and water collecting barrels with me. I hear there is snow - water run off from mountains and creeks may be overflowing in the area, but the roads look clear for traveling.

  • As of 4/6/19 it will be 11 days, and then I am heading up for a full week in the woods.
  • August 9th and 10th - Family Reunion - I will be bringing my family up to Shady Grove for a day time adventure / picnic.
  • April 17 to 22 is a camping week for all Shady Grover's in 2019 plus its a 420 weekend !
  • April Campout will be a great time to install my little wooden signs of "what camp is where"
  • Will be working on the Cabin in Spring 2019 and the Shower and Kitchen Area
  • February 2019 temps are in the single digits + snow!
January 2019 The cold temps at night, are creeping into the low 20's
I have not been to Shady Grove since October 2019

  • OCT / NOV / DEC / JAN / FEB
Cold Weather & Camping [never happened] - April Camping is in the works

  • I have 2 more rain barrels to haul up to Shady Grove in spring. Hope to get a small rain barrel collection of free water set up this spring / summer.
  • I have two old used wood fire pits here in the city that I am going to bring up to the camping areas at Shady Grove. I am planning on building a couple propane fire pits this year for use during the hot summer "fire ban".
  • I have a bunch of old patio metal furniture, chairs, lounges, and patio umbrellas ready for a good home this spring. Also found a free hammock on Craigslist. That makes a total of 3 Hammocks I will have in 2019 up at Shady.
  • I found an old "propane fridge" that was in a barn for years...it looks old but in good working order. I will be trying it out this spring. Its about the size of a small dishwasher.
  • I have ready to haul out to the Grove shower area, my used Hot Water Tank that will store my solar / sun heated "shower water". Might add a water feed from the wood stove to the tank at some point, for heating water by fire and then storing it in the tank
  • Picked up 2 outdoor "tire chairs" - cool chairs made from rubber bike tires
  •                2019 IS NOW HERE
  • I have been collecting bags of sawdust at the city house ....to haul out to Shady to spread on the trails and to soften the camping areas...also the sawdust is great for the compost toilet.
  • 12/6/18 news article on Climate Change and a having an (off grid) bug out place to-go-to  https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/30/realestate/climate-change-insurance-buy-land-somewhere-else.html ....owning land in a safe remote area.... in case of a natural disaster.
  • Been watching videos on how to remove big boulders ...like the one in my driveway....  I might try this cement-epoxy stuff that you pour into your pre-drilled holes in the boulder ... it dries up and cracks the rock.
  • The lot next to me and the one next to that one, were recently sold to a new owner named Ed. I got the news from the man who sold it. Hello Ed!
  • I have a backyard in Portland full of supplies for Shady Grove ... but winter is closing in
  • No week long camp out this year....maybe a 2 day camp out in mid October is still open
  • Planning a week long camp out in October 2018 - !! STAY TUNED !! [didn't happen]
  • I acquired a big heavy outdoor sink for the kitchen area - See the pictures tab and look for for 2018 - SHADY SINK
  • I have some nice round logs from a Locust tree to make furniture / chairs benches for the Shady Grove relaxing zones
  • I have a 8 x 8 floor built and I am collecting wood, lumber, windows to complete the First Cabin at Shady Grove ...This will turn into the "Outhouse" in the long term, but will be providing shelter, warmth, weather refuge when its completed this early fall.
  • It's September 16th and close to FIRE SEASON
  • I have ear-marked 13 campsites along the trail. some will have wood platforms others will be on soft dirt / grass and sawdust. There is a list of these campsites in the "Structures" folder.
  • The trail is complete, it runs only in the top 1/2 of the 5 acres, it makes a loop and has camping sites along the way. I have small limbs lining the path and will be sprinkling a layer of sawdust over the whole trail. It takes 5 minutes to walk the loop. There is a video in the video folder that is out dated but gives you an idea.
  • Lost track of how many camping trips have happened - its September 2018 and there has been over 1/2 dozen over nighters so far.
  • Camp out 5 and 6 were great --> working on the new cabin and shower (see 2018 pics)
  • Made new trails around the northern entrance (it makes a loop) still need lots of TLC
  • New video on the Trails
  • Camping Adventure #4 in 100 degree shade was fantastic
  • Camp out #4 = Mike & Lee one day / Mike by himself next day [took my new truck]
  • Camp out 4 made some new trails and planed out over a dozen new tent areas
  • Camping Adventure #3 -  Does anybody wanna go to the shady grove
  •  No work required !
  • 2 (two) day over night camping on June 30th and July 1st.... wanna stay longer or come later "no problem". Mike and Lee are going up on Sat evening ETA 8 PM 6/30
  • Rough-style-camping ....no running water ...no problem bring some with you.
  • There are some pictures of Camping Adventure #2 in the 2018 picture folder
  • There is a true story that on Fathers Day Lee cooked some excellent mouth quenching Taquila pork chops that I barely remember eating. I woke up and asked him why we didn't have dinner last night.
  • On the Fathers Day camp outing we cleared a few trees away from the main fire pit area and put also put a few more rocks around the pit. We are going to continue improving the main fire pit by bringing in dirt and sand for around a 10 foot perimeter of the rock circle. Also planning on a propane fire pit for the burn ban is now in effect up in till Sept 30th 2018
  • We were able to drive my Honda car all the way onto the property and park for the first time. It made unpacking the car EASY .... the dry hard dirt allowed this to be done as well as some creative navigating up the last few hundred feet.
  • Fathers day Camping with Mike n Lee for two nights happened on June 15/16 - Great time - good weather and lots of campground organizing got done - Tequila marinated pork chops on Sat night and the classic bacon and eggs on the Coleman stove each morning. We left the hammocks up, and a few items were left out rather than all packed and wrapped up when shut the camp down and went back to the city.
  • We got the wagon put together and it works good for hauling gear to the car
  • We plan on a mid June 2018 Camp Out - check the Camping page for more info / details
  • We cooked a steak on the fire and bacon and eggs on the camp stove. Brought plenty of beer and Gator Aids. No animals in our camp, besides the ants that were almost under every other rock you rolled over.We heard from the neighbor (Marty) that a small group of lost cows have been roaming around...and that a wild elk heard comes in through the area. We did see a fox or coyote slinking around and quickly turned and ran when it noticed us.
  • Marty told me a snow plow takes care of the main gravel road in winter. Last year 4 - 6 inches...but generally snow is not to bad in the area during winter ... (but) one year it was about 6 feet high.
  • We made a new camp spot (20 yards behind the original camp) and it has a nice big fire pit and clear overhead space. It need dirt and sand around the fir pit area and some grass removed (which will piss of a bunch of ants and insects) but other than that its perfect spot for a few tents and a place to hang out. We plan on making a dozen little camp spots in the Shady Grove 5 acre area.
  • Successful Camp out on Memorial Day by me and Lee. Good weather, friends stopped in for a visit (had a hard time locating the place) and we met the neighbor in the morning.
  • The neighbor who's daughter owns the 20 acres north of my 5 acres gave us permission to go up on the bluff on their property and check out the stars at night. Nice guy. He also told us the fire was in the 90's and it was started by a hot muffler piece falling into dry grass.
  • MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND 2018 WE SPEND ONE NIGHT AT SHADY GROVE
  • Planning a "Day Trip" in the beginning of March 2018 to see what is going on. I will be bringing a fire pit along with me.
  • See the new Weather tab ...lots of cold rain & snow (and high desert winds) in February
  • Planning 2018 spring activities. And I hope to get the first over night camp out as soon as winter weather warms up into the mid 40's. Not sure if there is snow at the Shady Grove or not as of 1/20/18. I'm thinking in mid March I might be able to do the camp out.
  • Learning "how to ? tips" from building the "tiny house" / "10 x 12" that we just put up in November here in the Portland  backyard. Learning what to do for the Shady Grove Cabin coming soon in Spring 2018.

  •  2018 IS NOW HERE
  • The Parkrose Cottage cost was 4K to have the main building built, needs inside upgrades
  • November picture were added to the Picture gallery (here) - It was cold and there was no disturbances on the property. Stayed for only a couple hours, with out any shelter or fire it was hard to "just hang out" in the cold chilly temperature of the low 40 something degrees.
  • October Fire Restriction have been removed, Burning is OK.
  • I have not been up to the Shady Grove for over a month. Updates about the gravel road and a conversation I had with my new neighbors is coming soon tp this page! 10/1/17
  • Lee and I went up on Tuesday 9/5 for a few hours, hot and smokey but no fires are close to the the Shady Grove. We cleared some loose brush, filled some ruts / holes and cut down a dead tree. Made some progress for a Motor-Home spot (see the picture tab). Need more tools and a good chain saw.
  • We sized up the 100 {steps long} driveway for a load of rock, and cleared branches and loose rocks from the road way leading to the entrance.
  • We seen 6 deer in the area that were taller than we were. You heard of Big Foot ... well this was Big Deer Foot. Also seen a pack of wild turkeys near the Shady Grove.9/5/17
  • New UPDATE - No Camping (but) a day trip on 9/5/17 (Tuesday) is loosely being planned
  • Due to having one of my renters "not pay his rent" Labor Day camping was cancelled & re organizing "my bill paying" due to lack of rent $ is paramount 9/4/17
  • UPDATE - camping on Monday night only - paying the bills problems result in less time at the Shady Grove - Will be going up on Monday 9/4 for one night.
  • 9/3/17 and 9/4/17 we are camping overnight for two nights [Labor Day]
  • I was quoted 600$  to have a company drop off my Motor-home. I will need some way to tow it "onto my property 50 feet into the grove" from where its dropped off. Providing the Driveway repairs have happened & the tow truck can back down to my property entrance.
  • 'On 8.27.17 I quickly looked over the Driveway condition and took some video footage see that video that is all about the SHADY GROVE DRIVEWAY REPAIR 2017 or you can also find it in the Video Tab in the menu above
  • We did not camp at the Grove on Sunday 8/27/17 when we went up, because we had truck problems: we dropped off more tools & supplies and went right back to Portland. We were having some troubles going up the steep inclines just outside of Goldendale.
  • We took some supplies to the Grove & set up a tiny camp on 8.13.17 (see Pictures tab) we only stayed there a few hours. See Camping Information Tab for upcoming overnight-er
